1973 ZD Sierra Foothills Zin

Picked up this bottle, probably in '75, at the ZD Winery when it was still located in a garage in Vineburg, just outside Sonoma. Norm and Gino still had their day jobs as engineers at Aerojet. I'm amazed that it tasted as good as it did, I was expecting that the wine was dead given the fill and condition of the cork. Not bad for their first Zinfandel. It is certainly a different style than today's fruit bombs. When was the last time you had a Zin that was only 12% alcohol?

  1. Given the condition of the fill level and cork, it was amazing that the wine has any life left. Color: light brick red, not showing much browning. Little fruit left, no off flavors, tasting like the old wine that it is. Much better with food and developed more as the dinner went on.
